Not wanting to be like every other dad, I decide not to take Emilia to the zoo, but rather to a glacier. She might as well see what itâs like to live in Alaska sooner rather than later.
We drive up to Portage Glacier. From here, we can stop somewhere to eat and maybe hit a store. Hike a trail or something.
My heart races as we grow closer. This will be the first time itâs just her and me having to converse for an entire day. Even if she doesnât say a lot yet.
After I park, I unbuckle her. Since she knows the drill now, she holds her hands up for me to pull her out. Weâve kind of mastered this nonverbal communication. Holding her in my arms, I lock the truck and head down the way to the ferry that will take us to see the glacier.
I watch Emilia while she looks around, soaking in her surroundings with wide eyes. I hand the tickets over and we climb aboard the boat. Emilia points at a flag flapping in the breeze, excitement overtaking her face. I smile and nod, confirming itâs a flag.
By the time the boat leaves the dock, Iâm surprised that itâs only half filled. I wouldâve thought thereâd be more tourists wanting to see the glacier. I situate us toward the front of the boat. Emilia sits next to me, her hand on my thigh. She clenches it when the boat starts with a jerk that jolts both of our bodies. I hold her small hand, feeling her warmth. She squeezes it tightly when the boat jolts again before coasting through the water.
âItâs okay. Itâs supposed to do that.â
My reassurance earns no reaction. She barely looks at me and I donât blame her. I havenât been the one providing her comfort since she got here.
Her gaze is on the front of the boat, the water, and the mountain weâre headed toward.
One of the tour guides comes over and squats so she can see Emiliaâs face. The woman is roughly my age, and she smiles at me as though she admires me having my daughter here. But she has no clue this is the first thing Iâve done for her.
âThatâs Portage Glacier,â she says to Emilia, who nods. âWe have to go by boat because itâs been receding for centuries. Thereâs a chance we might see the glacier calving, which is when a piece breaks off and goes into the water. Itâs pretty cool to watch.â She looks at me when she says that, then she stands and takes the microphone from the stand and introduces herself as Avery to everyone else on the boat.
Avery talks into the microphone while the boat continues toward the glacier. She talks about the rock formations and why they look the way they do. When we sail by a waterfall, Emilia gets on her knees to look over the edge of the boat, resting her arms along the metal railing.
âPretty cool, huh?â I ask, swiveling in my seat and placing one hand on her back.
